After recently updating my VMware View parent virtual machines, I discovered that a particular combination of settings prevents the Microsoft Lync Basic 2013 client from launching:
- Windows 7 SP1 x86
- Microsoft Lync Basic 2013 15.0.4420.1017
- Security Update for Microsoft Lync 2013 (KB2817465) 32-bit Edition
- VMware Horizon View 5.2 Remote Experience Agent (aka Feature Pack 2) 2.0.2100
- VMware Tools 9.0.5.21789
- VMware View Agent 5.2.0.987719
Under these conditions, the Microsoft Lync 2013 client in the virtual desktop will attempt to launch, but eventually crash with this error:

VMware Support is now aware of this issue and has an internal KB article about it. If you avoid upgrading to Feature Pack 2 or avoid applying the Microsoft Lync Security Update, you should be able to avoid the problem.
Wow, thanks for posting this, saved me a lot pain trying to figure this one out. Have you heard anything more from VMWare on this issue yet?
Hi, any news on this? Which Lync security update should not be installed?
Thanks, Aki
VMware said the bug is resolved in Feature Pack 3 (not yet available as of this posting on 9/24/2013). They are testing Feature Pack 3 internally and do not have the problem.
It’s a little disappointing that VMware has not updated the Feature Pack 2 Release Notes to list this as a known problem.
Aki, I mentioned that the update to avoid is (KB2817465) 32-bit Edition.
Thank you Jason, I’ll uninstall this security update from our master image and wait for the FP3. This was big help for us.
I don’t suppose VMWare hinted at when FP3 would be available? I’m having the same problem on Win 7 x64, but don’t have that particular Windows update installed.
VMware support said we should see Feature Pack 3 for Horizon View in Q4. Of course, I was told that a few months ago and we are just entering Q4. But they said FP3 was running in their lab and did not have problems with Microsoft Lync 2013 the way Feature Pack 2 has.
Thanks
Looks like feature pack 3 is known as Horizon View 5.3.
