FINA IT Support

Posted Thursday, October 7th, 2004 at 6:55 pm

One of the benefits of volunteering for FINA earlier this week is that I get to attend the championship this evening for free.

Though I saw, met, and offered IT support for many of the athletes, I did not see or meet Phelps. He hadn’t arrived yet for he was on Letterman Tuesday night. But it was still fun.

FINA World Championships

Today and tomorrow I’ll be serving as an IT volunteer for the FINA World Championships.

FINA is the Federation Internationale de Natation, (International Aquatics Federation). It is the International Summer Sports Federation for all aquatic sports, including swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo.

My job is the hang out in the Internet Cafe in the Athlete Village, offering any tech support that the athletes might need.

That’s right, I’m sitting here, right now, with Olympic athletes who are simply checking their email or catching up on local news from their country. At the moment, the Australian team is sitting next to me; well, at least 10 of them.

More than 100 countries will participate. I plan on watching the events this Thursday and Friday after work.

Indy ended up building an Olympic-sized pool on top of the basketball court at Conseco Fieldhouse. Pretty impressive.
